Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry option used to improve the appearance of teeth. They are thin shells designed to cover the front surfaces of teeth, providing a natural look while enhancing smiles.

Veneers are placed over the teeth to correct and address of variety of dental concerns, including chips, stains, discoloration, size discrepancies, and other imperfections. When considering veneers, they may be made from porcelain or composite materials. Patients often wonder about the differences between porcelain and composite materials.

Porcelain Veneers

Material Properties:

Porcelain veneers are made from high-quality ceramic that closely resembles the natural appearance of teeth. They are more durable and resistant to staining compared to composite veneers – this means that stains from common sources like coffee or wine are less likely with porcelain.

Aesthetics:

Porcelain reflects light in a way that mimics natural teeth, resulting in a more lifelike and natural appearance. Porcelain veneers can be custom-made to match the colour and shape of your existing teeth, ensuring a basically seamless blend of natural and porcelain veneered teeth.

Longevity:

With proper care, porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years or longer. They are less likely to chip or wear down over time, making them an excellent long-term option.

Procedure:

The process of applying dental veneers typically requires two visits. The first visit involves consultation and tooth preparation, while the second involves the bonding of the custom-made veneers.

Composite Veneers

Material Properties:

Composite veneers are made from a tooth-coloured resin (white colour filling material) that can be applied directly to teeth. They can be adjusted more easily and can be repaired if damaged.

Aesthetics:

While composite veneers can also provide a natural appearance, they may not match the translucency of natural teeth as well as porcelain veneers do. Moreover, over time, composite materials may stain or become discoloured more easily than porcelain. However, at GLEAM Dental we keep investing in newer and superior resin materials (for example, nano hybrids) that allow for excellent strength and  aesthetics; this now makes composite veneers an excellent alternative aesthetic choice relative to porcelain veneers.

Longevity:

Composite veneers have a similar longevity to porcelain veneers (i.e., 10 – 15 years), but they may require more frequent touch-ups or repairs.

Procedure:

The application of composite veneers is typically completed in a single visit versus two visits for porcelain veneers. The dentist will shape and bond the composite material directly to the teeth, with minimal to no enamel removal required. Usually no anesthesia is required. The procedure can be less invasive and more convenient for some patients.

Choosing Between Porcelain & Composite Veneers

Ultimately depends on your individual needs, preferences, and budget. Porcelain veneers are known for their durability and superior aesthetic appeal, making them ideal for those seeking a long-lasting, beautiful solution. On the other hand, composite veneers are typically more affordable and can be completed in a single visit, making them a suitable option for those looking for more rapid results that are also aesthetically pleasing.

What Happens During A Veneer Consultation?

During a consultation we listen to your views on what a beautiful smile is to you, analyze each tooth, subject to a holistic facial analysis, document the project with photos, and craft study models.

Sometimes patients bring us photographs of their youthful smiles and ask us to recreate what they once had. At other times, patients ask us to create the new smile they have always wished for. Regardless of the size of the change desired, the procedure is designed to be as painless as possible, minimally invasive, and life-changing for our patients.

We custom-design and create dental veneers that harmoniously enhance and complement the unique features of each smile and are delighted to discuss options. We work hard to provide our patients with the beautiful smiles that they always wished they had. Dental veneers, whether porcelain or composite, can be a part of your smile aesthetic transformation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many visits does the veneer process take?

Typically, the process involves two visits: one for assessment, planning, and tooth preparation; the second for bonding and final adjustments. Composite veneer procedures may sometimes be completed in a single visit, depending on the case.

Will getting dental veneers hurt?

No – getting dental veneers is generally not painful, as local anesthesia is used to prevent discomfort during the tooth preparation stage. Some mild, temporary discomfort or sensitivity is normal afterward as your mouth adjusts. The pain-free experience is primarily due to the removal of a very thin layer of enamel and the use of a numbing agent.

How long do veneers last?

Porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years, while composite veneers last about 5 to 7 years. Both types can last longer with proper care, including good oral hygiene, avoiding hard foods, and wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth. Factors like the quality of materials, proper placement, and avoiding habits like chewing on hard objects also impact their longevity.

Are there risks or drawbacks to veneers?

Yes, there are risks and drawbacks to dental veneers, including the irreversible nature of the process, potential temporary tooth sensitivity, and the possibility that veneers can chip or break, eventually requiring replacements.
