Back-to-School Dental Checklist for Toronto Families

August is when Toronto families get into planning mode. School supplies, new schedules, and appointment bookings all happen at once. Dental care belongs on that list too, and getting ahead of it now means no scrambling once the school year picks up.
At Gleam Dental on Roncesvalles, August is one of our busiest months for family appointments. Unrushed appointments, ergonomic chairs, and gentle hands make up for a stress-free and relaxing dental experience.
Here’s your 2026 back-to-school dental checklist for Toronto families:
1. Book a cleaning and exam
Summer brings late nights, sugary treats, and oral hygiene routines are the first to slip away. A dental exam and cleaning in August helps you catch any decay, gum inflammation, or wisdom tooth crowding while it is still early.
An exam and cleaning at Gleam Dental covers:
- Your dentist checks for cavities and reviews overall gum health
- Digital X-rays reveal decay between teeth and show wisdom tooth position
- A Velscope screening checks soft tissue for early signs of oral cancer
- We remove plaque and tartar, then apply fluoride where it helps
For teens and university students particularly, we recommend the AirFlow Guided Biofilm Therapy dental cleaning. It gently removes biofilm, stains, and early tartar with a warm spray of air, water, and fine powder.

2. Build an oral hygiene routine
School mornings run tight and nighttime routines get rushed, so the habits need to be simple enough to stick. Start practicing this routine 2-3 weeks before school starts.
Here is a dentist-recommended routine:
- Brush twice daily for 2 full minutes with a soft-bristled brush, held at a 45 degree angle to the gumline in short circular strokes
- Use a fluoride toothpaste with at least 1,450 ppm fluoride, which covers most standard adult formulas sold in Canada
- Floss once daily before bed with waxed floss or floss picks, and switch to a floss threader if braces or bridges are in the way
- Finish with an alcohol-free fluoride mouth rinse at night, particularly for anyone wearing braces or aligners
- Wait 30 minutes after acidic food or drinks before brushing so enamel has time to reharden
Worth sorting out before September:
- Replace any toothbrush older than 3 months or showing frayed bristles
- Pack a travel brush and toothpaste for anyone eating lunch away from home
- Keep a refillable water bottle on hand to rinse sugar away between meals
3. Explore Orthodontic treatments
Around 7 years of age, adult teeth start coming in and alignment issues become visible. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends a first assessment by this point.
At Gleam Dental, we offer three orthodontic treatments depending on age and the extent of correction needed:
Myobrace
It is a pre-orthodontic treatment for children between 3 and 15 years. Removable appliances worn 1 to 2 hours daily plus overnight correct the habits behind crooked teeth, including mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, and incorrect swallowing. Children who show early crowding while the jaw still has room to develop benefit most from it.
Braces
Suits patients from roughly age 11 onward, once most permanent teeth have erupted. Brackets bonded to each tooth and connected by an archwire move teeth into position over 18 to 24 months. Teens with significant crowding, rotation, or bite correction make good candidates.
Invisalign
Works for teens and adults with mild to moderate alignment concerns. A series of clear removable aligners shifts teeth gradually over 9 to 24 months, with each set worn 20 to 22 hours daily. It is a discreet option and works well for those ready to commit to the wear schedule.
4. Get a Custom Sports Mouthguard
Fall sports start in September, and hockey, basketball, rugby, and soccer all carry a real risk of dental injury. A custom mouthguard is a more reliable option as it’s moulded from a digital scan of your teeth, so it holds its position during play and spreads impact across the whole arch.
For Students Heading to University
Moving away changes how easily you reach a dentist. It’s essential to work with a Toronto dental clinic you’re familiar with and finish any pending treatment before you leave.
Here’s a checklist for you:
- Book an exam and X-ray to check if you need a wisdom tooth removal
- Get a cleaning done before you leave
- Fix any active cavities
- Sort out chips, gaps, or staining with composite bonding
- Ask about starting Invisalign
- Check your dental plan coverage
- Book your next cleaning for December or Reading Week
- Pack a proper hygiene kit
- Save an emergency dental contact near campus

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best age to get braces for a child?
Most children start braces between ages 11 and 14, once permanent teeth have come through and the jaw still has growth left to work with. Timing depends on how many baby teeth remain, whether the canines have erupted, how much room the arch has, and how the upper and lower jaws sit against each other.
An assessment at age 7 tells us whether treatment is needed and when to begin.
Can teenagers get Invisalign, or should they wait until they’re older?
Teenagers do very well with Invisalign once most permanent teeth have erupted and the case falls in the mild to moderate range. Compliance decides the outcome. Aligners need 20 to 22 hours of daily wear, so we talk that through openly before starting.
If they don’t feel comfortable with the idea, our Toronto dentists recommend that they wait until they’re 21 years old.
Is AirFlow cleaning safe for teens with braces or aligners?
Yes, and it works especially well for them. Brackets and wires trap biofilm where a brush cannot reach, and the fine erythritol powder clears those spaces without scratching enamel or damaging the appliance. Patients wearing aligners simply remove them for the appointment.
Do you recommend teeth whitening for teenagers?
We usually wait until around age 16 for teeth whitening, once enamel has matured and all permanent teeth are in place. Younger teeth have larger pulp chambers, which raises sensitivity and makes results less predictable.
