Invisalign moves your teeth gradually through a series of custom aligners, each one shifting them a fraction closer to their final position. Compared to braces, the aligners stay clear and removable, which lets you eat and clean your teeth normally. 

However, the treatment demands higher compliance, since the aligners only work while you wear them 20 to 22 hours a day. We hope this blog offers you a week-by-week look into the journey.

Week 1: The Adjustment

Treatment starts with attachments, small tooth-coloured composite bumps bonded to certain teeth. They give the aligners grip for movements the smooth surface cannot manage alone, like rotations. Most patients need them, so they are routine rather than a sign of a complex case. Placement is painless and takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Soreness begins once the aligners go in. Most patients feel dull pressure for the first 2 to 3 days as the teeth start to shift, and it fades as the mouth adapts. Your tongue will feel rough edges on the attachments for the first 48 hours, then stops noticing them as the mouth adapts.

• A mild lisp can appear for the first day or 2, then goes as the tongue adjusts to the aligners
• Softer foods for the first few days of each new set ease the pressure on tender teeth
• Aligners stay in for 20 to 22 hours daily, out only for meals and drinks other than water

Weeks 2 to 4: Building the Routine

Switch to each new set in the evening rather than the morning. The tightest pressure then passes while you sleep, and your teeth feel comfortable by the time you wake and start talking.

Weeks 5 to 8: Your First Check-Up

Your dentist will book you in for the first progress appointment around the 6 to 8 week mark. During the consult, they check that each tooth is moving against the plan, inspect the attachments, and confirm the aligners still fit. They hand over your next few sets before you leave.

The aligners feel like part of your day by now, with each tray change bringing only mild, brief soreness.

• Book a hygiene cleaning at this point, since aligners slow the natural rinsing from saliva and let plaque build faster
• Hold off on whitening until treatment ends, as the gel cannot reach under the attachments and leaves uneven patches

Did you know? The aligner edges along the gumline can turn slightly rough during a tray’s wear, usually from daily removal and reinserting. If they start rubbing against your cheeks or gums, your dental team can file them smooth at your visit.

Weeks 8 and Beyond: Mid-Treatment Adjustments

Treatment runs 9 to 24 months for most mild to moderate cases, so this middle stretch makes up the bulk of the journey. Your teeth take on more demanding movements now, such as deeper rotations and root positioning, and your dentist may add attachments that were not needed earlier.

Your dentist may also do something called interproximal reduction around this stage. They gently smooth away a sliver of enamel between certain teeth, thinner than a fingernail, to open up room for crowded teeth to shift into. It is painless and you will not notice the difference in your teeth afterward.

• Your teeth look visibly straighter over these months, gaps close and crowded teeth line up, and friends or family often comment on the change
• Progress appointments continue every 6 to 8 weeks, where your dentist tracks movement and hands over the next sets

Did you know? Refinements are a normal, planned part of many treatments. Your dentist takes a fresh scan once the first series finishes, then orders a short extra set of aligners to fine-tune the final positions.

Final Weeks: The Finish

Towards the end of your treatment, your dentist will schedule you for an assessment and digital scan. From here, treatment shifts into retention, and you will receive a retainer. Since teeth drift back into their old positions, the retainer prevents that and protects the result you built.

Some retainer options your dentist will offer include:

• Clear removable retainers look like the aligners and stay nearly invisible, and you take them out to eat and clean them
• Bonded retainers sit as a thin wire fixed behind the front teeth, out of sight and always in place
• Hawley retainers use an acrylic plate and a visible wire, and your dentist can adjust them if a tooth needs slight correction later

Most patients wear a retainer full time for the first 3 to 6 months, then switch to nights only. Nighttime wear continues long term, often for life, since teeth can shift again even years after treatment.
